ISS Astronaut Captures Striking Image of Rare ‘Sprite’ Phenomenon Above Thunderstorm

In an awe-inspiring display captured from 250 miles (400 kilometers) above the Earth aboard the International Space Station, U.S. astronaut Nichole “Vapor” Ayers has documented a rare atmospheric event known as a “sprite.” These phenomena, categorized as Transient Luminous Events (TLEs), occur in the upper atmosphere due to intense electrical activity in thunderstorms.

Ayers shared her remarkable image on X, highlighting the scientific importance of such observations. “Sprites are TLEs that happen above the clouds and are triggered by intense electrical activity below,” she explained. “Our vantage point above the clouds allows scientists to better understand the formation, characteristics, and relationships of TLEs to thunderstorms.”

Sprites are some of the most visually stunning and least understood electrical phenomena. Typically occurring approximately 50 miles (80 kilometers) above Earth’s surface, they appear following powerful lightning strikes. These events manifest in various shapes, characterized by tendril-like structures and red plumes that stretch into the upper atmosphere.

The captured image reveals a sprite as a tree-like column with red, branch-like tendrils extending towards space, set against the backdrop of lightning-illuminated clouds, providing scientists with valuable data to study these intriguing phenomena.

As Ayers and her colleagues continue to share these breathtaking views from space, their contributions propel our understanding of the Earth’s atmospheric processes. Through such endeavors, we gain deeper insight into the dynamic interplay between thunderstorms and the captivations of TLEs above.
